The music of the Epiphany season is filled with a celebratory call to make the presence and truth of Christ manifest throughout the world. Spirituals like, “Go Tell it on the Mountain” and “There’s a Star in the East” make this point clear.
In the latter spiritual, it says, “There’s a star in the East on Christmas morn, rise up, shepherd, and follow; it will lead to the place where Christ was born; rise up, shepherd, and follow. If you take good heed to the angel’s words; rise up, shepherd, and follow; you’ll forget your flocks, you’ll forget your herds; rise up shepherd, and follow.” The words here call us to trust God, to leave our secure lives and search for the Christ child through following the Star in the East. In this season, we also hear the stories of Jesus preaching, teaching, and doing miracles throughout the land. We see Jesus also call the twelve disciples from ordinary lives to extraordinary lives. We are called into the unknown, no matter what worries or fears we have. Christ can do amazing things through us when we keep our eyes focused on his light.
